Make Mobile Devices Work For You

Easy and effective securing Windows Mobile devices

Business Use

PDAs, and especially smartphones, are very popular devices. Sadly many IT departments still ignore Windows Mobile devices. The devices live in the grey area where they do interact with the business systems (like Exchange and Sharepoint), but are not secured according to company policy. This results in an unmanaged risk in the infrastructure: the devices do contain business information but no demands are posed upon them to make them secure. We identify the risks that are introduced and show you that these risks are in fact unnecessary because you can do reduce the risks without adding costs or overhead. In this article we show how you can achieve a reasonable level of security that has minimal impact on user experience and budget.

Being Mobile

The next step in Windows Mobile is Windows Mobile 6, also commonly referred to as Crossbow. We had the privelege to work with it and see what it brings to you, the professional roadwarrior. In this review we aim to show what these improvements are and how they affect you.

In this article we present timesavers and ways of working that might help work more effectively, allowing you to get more out of your time.

Can a PocketPC replace a laptop in real life?

Business Use

About 8 years ago life was simple: we all started with big laptops and small simple mobile digital assistants. Since then the laptop has become more portable and the PocketPC has become more all-round and powerful. But life has become even more complicated because the mobile market has become more and more crowded: we now have Windows Mobile powered smartphones, PocketPC phone editions, UMPC's (Ultra Mobile PC), TabletPC's and laptops. All these platforms are converging towards a specific form factor: TabletPC, UMPC and PocketPC are starting to look alike. But where does it lead us? What does it bring us in real life?

The (non)sense of push communication

Staying in touch

Push e-mail seems to have become the holy grail of mobile computing. In the US, Blackberry is a huge success, and now other players in the mobile arena see it as the feature to have as well. Regardless if we want it, new devices will be equiped with push e-mail. But is it desirable to have push e-mail in the first place? And what is the business value of push e-mail? In this article we try to address these questions.

Can you afford to ignore device security?

Business Use

Many people worry about mobile device security. According to a study initiated by Symantec, many companies (around 60%) are shying away from deploying mobile devices because of the security concerns involved. Management worries about the security of mobile devices and system administrators don't have the feeling they have a grip on the security of a mobile device. Although in the short term this might counter the risk, in the long run the result is that many system administrators simply deny the existence of mobile devices, basically enlarging the security problem instead of managing it explicitly.

Mobile e-mail in the real world

Business Use

I have been using the standard Windows Mobile IMAP-mail client on our company Lotus Notes server for about a year now, without any problems. So without any hesitation I advised two colleagues of mine to use an I-Mate K-Jam for downloading their mail. They saw how i used it, loved the idea of reading their mail on the road and decided they wanted it as well. Little did i know that IMAP on a Windows Mobile device also has its limitations.

The Modern Nomad

Being Mobile

In the old days, people traveled from place to place traveling as light as possible. Living of what their surroundings had to offer. Modern men (and women) are not that different. Commuters, students, consultants and businessmen travel a lot from place to place as well, having to travel light, needing to live on the combination of what they brought with them and what their environment has to offer them. But how do these people live?
