According to a 2024 report by the Woman Traveler, more than 64% of today’s travelers are women— of whom a significant amount are solo travelers. Solo female travel may be on the rise, but many women travelers still cite safety as their top concern—so how do you explore independently, while staying safe?

I’ve been traveling solo for well over a decade and have never looked back. My insecurities—would I meet friends, get lost, feel lonely— are distant memories. I have traveled solo to Colombia, India, South Africa, Morocco, and dozens more countries. I’ve found some of my favorite hobbies and met some of my closest friends during these independent trips—and I couldn’t recommend it enough to other women.

I get endless questions from skeptics about my safety—even in places where I have spent extensive time. The biggest piece of advice I can extend is to book that flight and embrace the freedom of your solo adventure—but remember to stay safe. From destination knowledge to being equipped technologically, these nine tips can help you set sail confidently on your next solo trip abroad.

Tip 1: Research Your Destination Thoroughly

No matter how experienced you are, each destination comes with its own set of customs and expectations—whether it’s dress codes, tipping etiquette, local transportation, or how to get a SIM card. Taking time to research the basics before you go can help you arrive better prepared, with a clearer idea of what to expect and how to navigate your surroundings respectfully and safely.

It’s also wise to check for political or environmental instabilities by reviewing current events and travel advisories from sources like the US Department of State and the UK FCDO. These alerts don’t always mean you shouldn’t go, but they do flag areas or situations to be aware of. To round out your research, connect with experienced travelers through online communities like Solo Traveler, Girls Who Travel, and the Solo Female Traveler Network for personal insights and destination-specific tips.

Tip 2: Get Bundled Travel Insurance

Purchasing travel insurance is one of the best investments you can make for your trip. You never know what can happen: missed planes, delayed trains, food poisoning, road accidents, natural disasters. While you never anticipate the worst happening, it’s always best to prepare for it so you can travel with peace of mind.

Tip 4: Blend In with the Locals

In many destinations, you won’t fully blend in—and that’s okay. But making an effort to dress in a culturally appropriate way shows respect and can help you feel more at ease. Embrace local styles when possible, and in more conservative areas, such as many Islamic countries, modest dress is expected: cover your shoulders and knees, opt for loose-fitting clothing, and carry a light scarf for extra coverage.

Beyond how you dress, learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way. It shows curiosity and respect, helps build connections, and can be especially useful if you need help or directions. These small efforts make a big difference in how you're received—and how confidently you navigate your journey.

Tip 5: Trust Your Instincts and Set Boundaries

There’s no exact guidebook for navigating the real world of solo travel. Listen to your intuition. If a situation or a person feels off, trust that instinct. When we travel, we are eager to meet new people and go on spontaneous adventures—but it’s also okay to say no. I sometimes feel guilty or rude when a man I meet at a café invites me to an event or to a meal, but learning from lessons past, I would rather not find myself in an uncomfortable or compromising situation.

On the other hand, I’m much more likely to say yes when a woman or family invites me somewhere. Connecting with friends of friends in a new city or country is another great way to connect with locals and know they’re coming from a trusted mutual friend.

Tip 6: Be Smart About Technology

While technology can sometimes pull us out of the moment, it’s also one of the best tools for solo travelers. A smartphone puts everything you need in one place—digital copies of your passport, hotel reservations, maps, and emergency contacts. One of the first things to do upon arrival is to get connected, either with a local SIM or an e-SIM downloaded in advance, which can make navigating from the airport much easier. For longer stays, local plans often offer the best value.

It's also wise to plan for limited connectivity. Download offline maps, save emergency contacts, and install local rideshare apps—many countries use alternatives to Uber. Keep key phone numbers on hand, like your accommodation or nearby hospitals, in case of emergency. And don’t forget a power bank, so your lifeline to all these tools stays charged throughout your trip.

Tip 7: Keep Emergency Essentials Handy

Even a small setback—like a lost or stolen passport—can quickly derail your trip. Keeping hard copies of important documents, such as your passport, visa, insurance details, and emergency contacts, can be a lifesaver if your phone is lost or stolen. While digital backups are useful, don’t rely on technology alone—a physical backup offers peace of mind.

It’s also smart to manage your money and cards carefully. Never carry all your cash or credit cards at once. Instead, take only what you need for the day and store the rest securely at your accommodation, if possible.

Tip 8: Be smart about going out at night and partying

Places that feel safe during the day can feel very different at night. Before heading out after dark, read up on other travelers’ experiences and stick to well-lit, populated areas. If you're venturing out solo, let someone know your plans, carry a charged phone, and bring only what you need—some cash, one card, and a backup charger.

The same caution applies when partying or going to clubs and festivals alone. You don’t have to skip the fun but stay aware and in control—consider staying sober so you can better assess situations. Be cautious about accepting drinks from strangers and never leave your drink unattended to avoid the risk of spiking. It’s okay to meet new friends on the dance floor but also remember to use your best judgement.

Tip 9: Don’t be afraid to get lost and learn to go with the flow.

We are often so worried about preventing things from going wrong that we plan out every detail. But getting lost and having hiccups along the way are part of the adventure. A wrong turn may bring you to an unexpected restaurant or cool festival.

Wrong turns also help us grow, teaching us how to navigate both the good and bad of traveling. From cyclones to motorcycle accidents, I’ve weathered my fair share of storms on the road. Each of these incidents has made me a more resourceful and confident traveler and has taught me to let go of expectations, accept the unexpected, and go with the flow.

There's a lot of debate about the “right” or “wrong” way to include children in travel. So, it’s no surprise that many parents hesitate to travel alone with kids.

My son, now 12, has been traveling with me since he was 6 months old. We’ve traveled together to over 30 countries across five continents. Through these trips, I’ve identified many tips and best practices to keep us safe and save my sanity. Here's what I've learned.

Challenges and benefits of traveling as a single parent

Solo parent travel can seem daunting. Managing logistics, safety, and entertainment can feel overwhelming without a second adult sharing the load. You’re the navigator, caregiver, and problem-solver all in one. Plus, balancing your child’s needs with your own desire to explore and unwind isn’t always easy.

But traveling solo with your child also brings incredible rewards. You build a deeper bond through shared memories. Problem-solving together fosters resilience and independence for both of you, even when things go off track.

My son and I have tackled leeches, mosquitoes, broken luggage, and power outages together. They are some of our favorite travel stories. Best of all, navigating a trip on your terms is empowering, while setting an example of strength and accomplishment for your child.

Pre-trip preparation

Impulsive travel is hard when traveling with children, particularly younger kids. This is intensified when you are solo parenting. Ultimately, some preparation will alleviate anxiety and boost your confidence.

Trip planning

Consider putting together an itinerary.
Secure accommodation in advance, at least for the first night of your trip, so you can rest upon arrival.
Using reputable sources, research neighborhoods where you will be comfortable staying.
If you feel intimidated or concerned about transportation, reach out to your hotel to see about arranging a driver to pick you up. The extra set of hands may prove beneficial!
Having an international phone plan or SIM ready to go upon landing will provide peace of mind.
Note down key emergency phone numbers, including the nearest embassy for your home country, and how to dial for help in the location you're visiting. For example, 999 is the emergency line in the UK, 911 in the US, and within the EU, dialing 112 will connect you to emergency services.

Important paperwork

Before departure, print out any pertinent paperwork, such as visas, flight details, and a color copy of your passport photo page. Store this in another part of your bag, away from your passport. In the unlikely event that your passport gets misplaced, this will help with replacement.

Some locations, including South Africa and some EU countries, require legal evidence that a solo parent has permission to cross borders with a child, without the other parent present. A notarized legal consent form, granting permission to travel and make any medical decisions, and a notarized copy of a birth certificate are travel essentials.

Medical and safety considerations

Accidents happen. Bring a travel medical kit with basic medicines and band aids. Keep vaccinations up to date and pack an adequate supply of any prescription medications.

Best practices for staying safe

I recommend bringing a day bag that lets you carry what you need safely and securely, while still having your hands free to hold little ones. This might be a backpack, sling bag, or crossbody. Be sure that it is locked and secured from pickpockets.

For physical safety, the real work begins before your trip. Establish consistent safety rules at home until they become second nature for your child. Then, follow the same safety rules while traveling, such as holding hands when crossing the street, not wandering off alone, staying together in crowds, and not going into the pool without an adult.

You might consider attaching an Air Tag to your child or an ID bracelet, such as Road iD, with parent contact information. Walking harnesses with a leash that can be held or attached to a parent may be controversial, but they can prevent dangerous situations. This is particularly useful for wiggly toddlers or parents handling multiple young children.

Ultimately, being aware, prepared, and attentive is the best safety advice.

Finding kid-friendly spaces

There are several apps on the market to help simplify your trip and provide safe and kid-friendly solo-parent travel suggestions. GoWhee provides crowd-sourced entries for almost 700,000 playgrounds, accommodations, restaurants, and activities worldwide, updated regularly by traveling parents.

Many museums offer child-oriented activities – ask at their check-in desk. Some also have audio guides uniquely tailored to children, such as the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

If you visit US National Parks, ask about the Junior Ranger program. This is an activity-based program designed to promote engaged learning, conservation, and stewardship. Once the required tasks are completed, children are awarded a park-specific Junior Ranger badge and certificate.

Consider hands-on activities, such as a cooking class or guided nature walk, that allow you to engage in new experiences together. Some of our favorites have been a momo-making class in Nepal and a jade-carving class in Guatemala.

In a pinch, you can create your own scavenger hunt. This is easy to do indoors and out, with many excellent free online resources to provide ideas.

Best places to travel with kids

Consider your comfort level with international travel, the time available for your trip, and what interests you and your children. If this is your first solo parent trip, consider a weekend getaway not far from home, within your own country, as a trial run.

Then, move on to destinations that are easy to navigate, speak the same language as you, and/or offer plenty of kid-friendly activities. Some suggestions would be London, Tokyo, Singapore, Fiji, or Costa Rica.

National parks and beach resorts with family amenities also make great low-stress options for first-time solo parent adventures.

Pressed for planning and research time? Organized tours take the stress out of planning by handling logistics and providing built-in support. They offer a chance to connect with other parents and give kids a ready-made group of friends to explore with.

Maintaining your sanity

One of the easiest ways to have a good day? Pack plenty of snacks! No one is crankier than a hungry child (or adult!). Local shops and grocery stores are an easy, budget-friendly way to restock during your trip.

Keeping a balance between organized time and unstructured time will also help your travel as a single parent go smoother.

Like any other travel experience, set realistic timelines and expectations, and be flexible. Most important is the quality time you will have one-on-one with your child, and the unique memories you will make together.

How to Travel with a Suit or Wedding Dress

Destination weddings are one of the fastest-growing travel trends, with busy couples combining their nuptials with a holiday for themselves and their guests, often overseas – an idea that can end up costing less than a separate wedding and honeymoon.

Family reunions are also going inter-state and international, with guests flying in for special events that require fancy outfits to match the occasion. And, in the post-COVID world, the corporate sector has reverted to in-person meetings, often overseas, instead of online video calls.

So, if a wedding dress, business or evening suit, or formal dress has to travel with you, here’s how to pack and transport your outfits so they’re crumple-free on arrival, even if you’re not.

Should I check-in or carry-on my wedding dress or suit?

Carry-on, carry-on, carry-on! You’ve spent a lot of money and effort on these clothes, and you absolutely need them to arrive at the same destination as you, at the same time, and in great condition. Don’t risk them getting lost, delayed, damaged, or stolen by checking them in on a flight.

Plus, can you imagine what your suit or wedding dress would look like after a few trips around the baggage carousel at Arrivals?

As you’ll probably have accessories, such as a bag, shoes, and jewelry, to go with your outfit, take those as carry-on too.

Preparing to travel with a wedding dress or suit

It’s a good idea to let your airline know in advance if you’re traveling with a bulky item such as wedding dress, suit, or hat box, to be sure there will be room in a closet or storage locker. Most airlines will do their best to accommodate you, but they can’t promise there will be space.

Otherwise, you might consider upgrading your seat to ensure hanging space in a more premium cabin, buying a second seat (if the airline allows this), or paying more for early boarding to guarantee room in an overhead bin close to your seat. You don’t want to get this far and then have another traveler’s bag crush your clothes.

Remember, your wedding dress will be counted in your allotment for carry-on luggage and may be subject to size and weight restrictions, or you might have to pay a fee.

How to pack a suit when you travel

Whether you’re traveling with a suit for business or pleasure, use a proper garment bag to transport it. They are usually sturdy, with hangers for jackets, pants, and shirts, and often fold in half to be zipped up and made more portable. On board the flight, you can unzip the bag to allow the suit and shirts to hang down if there’s a closet available.

If you don’t have a garment bag and must pack your suit in a case or duffel bag, you have a couple of options.

With the suit on a hanger, put it inside a plastic dry-cleaning bag, fold it in half and put it on the top of the other clothes in your luggage.
If you’re travelling with a smaller bag, turn the shoulders of the jacket inside out and fold the jacket in half vertically so the lapels touch, then lay it flat and fold it into thirds.
On arrival, unfold and turn the shoulders back out again.

If it’s not a long-haul flight, you could also consider wearing the suit pants, and either folding the jacket in half to be laid flat in the overhead locker on top of any luggage or laid flat over your lap.

How to pack a dress shirt

Shirts are tricky to pack because they are usually made of cotton which easily creases, even after a short amount of time. However, if you fold it the right way, you can minimize wrinkles.

Lay the shirt flat on a table, buttoned, front side down.
Cross the sleeves across the back to form an X, and then fold each sleeve up so the cuff touches the collar.
Fold the shirt in thirds lengthwise, bringing the shoulders in towards the center. Then, fold the shirt up from the bottom one third at a time.
Place it in your luggage on top of the other clothes, or pop in a packing cube of its own.

How to pack a wedding dress

Most wedding dresses come in a special garment bag that the dress hangs inside, usually with a zip to keep it safe from dust and dirt. When traveling with your wedding dress, this garment bag will come in handy. Your dress must go through security, on a dirty conveyor belt, as well as into an airplane overhead locker or closet which might not be clean, so make sure the bag is waterproof and sturdy enough to withstand being moved around.

Ask the sales assistant to show you how to fold the dress to keep it as wrinkle-free as possible. Also, check that the garment can tolerate steaming or ironing and ask for any fabric-specific tips on how to get rid of wrinkles on arrival.

How to make your clothes look great when you unpack

Unpack your dress, shirt, or suit as soon as you arrive at your accommodation and hang it up to let any wrinkles fall out naturally which will usually happen overnight. If time is of the essence, your hotel room may have a steamer or iron, or a concierge service that can arrange that for you. If that's not going to be possible, you could travel with a portable steamer (be sure to use filtered water).

If you’re not confident about using a steamer or iron on your dress or suit, or letting anyone else either, a good trick is to run a hot bath or shower, and to hang the garment in the bathroom for 10 minutes as the steam fills the room.

It goes without saying that travel is life-changing. The more I travel, the more I feel like I understand the world, the people in it, and, often, myself. Getting off the beaten path, meeting locals, and visiting incredible sites has made my life better. And it will make your life better too, especially if you do it solo at one point. Solo travel is the greatest teacher.

But, while you’re out there exploring the world, it’s good to know a few practical tips to make sure you save money, have a deeper travel experience, and reduce the likelihood something bad will happen to you on the road. While I go into a lot of depth in my new book on budget travel, I want to share some high-impact tips.

Pack light

Write down a list of essentials, cut it in half, and then only pack that! Take half the clothes you think you will need...you won’t need as much as you think. It’s OK to wear the same t-shirt a few days in a row.

But bring extra socks! You’ll lose a bunch to laundry gremlins, wear and tear, and hiking so packing extra will come in handy. Take a few more than you need. Trust me on this.

Stay in hostels

They are cheap, they organize events, you’ll meet a lot of people, and they are just tons of fun! Hostelworld is the best hostel-accommodation site out there, with the largest inventory, best search interface, and highest availability. I use it for all my hostel bookings.

Always visit the local tourism information center

This is probably one of the most underused travel tips in the world. Tourism information centers know about everything going on in town. They can point you to free activities, special events happening during your stay, and everything in between. They are also staffed by locals who can tell you all the ins and outs of their city.

Plus, they often offer city tourism cards that can get you into multiple attractions for one set price, saving you a lot of money if you’re going to do a lot of sightseeing. Don’t skip them!

Take free walking tours

Besides being free, these tours will give you a good orientation and background of the city you are visiting. I love, love, love taking walking tours when I travel. You pass the time, you get to pepper the guide with questions, and you get to learn so much about where you are. They have exploded in popularity in the last few years and you can find them in pretty much any major city in the world.

Ask hostel staff for information — even when you aren’t staying there

Hostel staff deal with budget travelers all day, every day. They know exactly where to go for cheap meals and attractions. They also tend to be locals so they know the city very well. Ask them for all sorts of information. Even if you aren't staying in one, just pop in and ask for help. They'll usually give it.

Always carry a lock

Carry a small combination lock with you when you travel. They come in handy, especially when you stay in dorms. Most hostels use lockers, so budget travelers need to provide their own travel lock to keep stuff secured. While you can usually rent or buy them at hostels, it's much cheaper just to buy one before you go. (Just don't use one with keys because if you lose the keys, you're screwed!)

Follow the “5 Block” Rule

Don’t eat within five blocks of a major tourist attraction or area! Walk in any direction and search for a place to eat when you hit five blocks. There’s an invisible line at five blocks and most tourists don’t go past it. Once you do, all of a sudden you’ll notice that the crowds are gone, the menus stop being listed in multiple languages, and the prices come down.

Sure, you might find a good meal in a tourist area, but you’ll find a better, cheaper meal outside it. Go where the menus aren’t in multiple languages. Go to those little, tiny hole-in-the-wall places that you are unsure about. The meal might not knock your socks off every time but it will be a memorable and more local experience.

Use technology to meet locals

Use sharing-economy websites to connect with the locals. The sharing economy has changed the way people travel, allowing you to make new friends, get off the tourist trail, and save mega money by going directly to the people. It's a triple win – and I use these resources all the time when I travel. Some of my favorite companies are Couchsurfing, Find a Travel Buddy Facebook Group, BlaBlaCar, and EatWith.

Take a reusable water bottle

Single-use plastics are common in a lot of countries around the world. They're also polluting our oceans and destroying the environment. Drink from the tap when you can – you’ll save money and help the environment. If you're going somewhere where you can't drink the water, be sure to get a water bottle with a filter. LifeStraw is my favorite company for this.

Consider travel insurance

Travel insurance is the most important thing to get that you never want to use. If something goes wrong, you don’t want to be out thousands of dollars in bills. Travel insurance can help cover you if you get robbed, your flights get canceled, you get sick or injured, or have to be sent home. For just a few dollars a day, it’s one of the best investments you can make for a trip.

You may think you’re superman/woman but so did my friend who broke her arm, didn't have insurance, and had to pay thousands out of pocket. Insurance was there when I had to replace my camera and when I popped an eardrum scuba diving! You should definitely consider it.

If you’re traveling multiple times a year, be sure to look into an annual travel insurance plan. They often cost less compared to buying multiple plans, let you be more spontaneous, and you don’t have to remember to always buy insurance before heading out.

When I first started traveling to Cuba over a decade ago, American credit cards and ATM cards didn’t work there (and still don’t), and Airbnb hadn’t yet arrived. I had to learn how to travel with cash because I would go for months at a time, carrying enough to pay for accommodations, activities, transportation, and food. Once, I ran out of money after a three-month trip and had to ask a friend in Mexico to book my flight out of Cuba.

Carrying large amounts of money can be inconvenient at best – and dangerous at worst – so I developed several strategies for traveling with cash while minimizing risk. Years later, I still rely on these strategies to get through trips where cash is king.

Why travel with cash?

In some destinations, such as very remote areas, there may be no other option. But even if you can use credit cards, there are still a lot of benefits to carrying cash.

Have a backup for emergencies: Cash is nearly always accepted so it’s often the best form of payment for housing, medical, and other emergencies, particularly in remote areas.
Cash for small purchases and tips: Paying for small purchases and gratuities with cash is often quicker and easier than negotiating with credit cards.
Cash is preferred some places: In some destinations, there is a strong preference for cash and merchants may require a large minimum amount to use a credit card, or they simply may offer a discount on cash purchases.
Inability to access your bank account: Even if you should technically have access to your bank account, unsecure internet connections and malware threats could block access when traveling.
Limited access to banks or ATMS: Even if a country has ATMs that accept your bank cards, they may be few and far between, or charge exorbitant withdrawal fees.

How much cash are you allowed to travel with?

The amount varies from country to country, so check the rules related to your destination before your trip to avoid being hit with fines. Now, knowing how much cash you’re allowed to travel with is different from determining exactly how much you should bring. Just because you’re allowed to travel with $5,000 doesn’t mean you need to travel with that much. Determine what daily and total expenses you anticipate needing to pay for with cash and bring a bit extra for emergencies.

Where is the safest place to keep cash when traveling?

I’ve found that the safest place to store my cash is everywhere. Money belts are a popular way to keep cash safe (tucked under your shirt, of course), but if a pickpocket makes off with it, you’ll be out of luck if you kept everything in that one place. Personally, I like to distribute my cash among various places, such as:

In several inner pockets of my backpack
Zippered sections of my toiletries bag
Inside my hip pouch
Rolled up in socks
Between pages in books
Folded into souvenirs

How to keep your money safe

As mentioned previously, the safest way to store your cash is to spread it out across multiple places. If you’re staying at a hotel with a safe, store your extra cash in the safe and only carry with you what you need for the day.

In Cuba, most of the private houses I stayed in didn’t have proper safes so I sometimes asked the owner to hold my money for me. To minimize risk for both of us, the owner would draw up a receipt stating how much cash they were holding and we would both sign it. While this strategy could have negative consequences, I never had a bad experience.

What to do if your cash is lost or stolen

Once you’ve checked and rechecked everywhere that your missing cash may be, sit down and figure out how much money you’ll need for the rest of your trip. If you can’t get by with credit cards or bank cards, contact friends or family at home to see if they could wire money to you through a local bank or Western Union, or if they could pre-pay any remaining expenses you have like unbooked hotels.

Savvy travelers should consider all financial transactions, including those made with credit cards, pre-paid cash cards, banking apps, and travel bank accounts.

Paying with cash is often safer than paying with credit cards or banking apps, which are inherently susceptible to fraud, but traveling with large amounts of cash that could be stolen presents its own threat.

To avoid having to pay for everything with cash in the destination, try to prepay large expenses like accommodations, meals (which are sometimes included with hotel reservations), and activities beforehand. Traveling with credit cards

Keep your credit cards safe by keeping them close to your body, be it in a money belt, front-facing waist belt, or deep front pocket. Up the security even more by storing credit cards in a tamper-proof, RFID-blocking wallet.

Should you be the victim of theft, know how to report a stolen credit card without actually having your card in front of you. If someone stole your wallet, you can no longer look for the 1-800 number on the back of your card so keep that number stored inside your phone, a digital calendar, or even within an email for easy access.

In countries where credit cards are rarely accepted, there may be a workaround app. For instance, in Bhutan, the Department of Tourism endorses the MyPay app, a mobile wallet app where you can link your international credit cards to use across the country.

Traveling with a pre-paid cash card

Some countries offer pre-paid cash cards specific to that country (like Cuba does), but for cards that go beyond the boundaries of a single country, look into pre-paid international travel cards.

Like credit cards, pre-paid international travel cards eliminate the need to carry a lot of cash. They can be used at hotels, restaurants, and shops, and some include chip and PIN capabilities that enable them to be used at international ATMs or to be cancelled and replaced if stolen.

These cards can help with budgeting and fraud protection, but they also typically cost more, be it through foreign transaction fees or fees associated with recouping any remaining money not spent overseas. Also note that some of these multi-currency cards only work in certain countries and with certain currencies, so confirm all the details before you buy them.

Travel bank accounts

Creating a separate bank account just for withdrawing money during your trip can be a smart way to save money for vacation and then minimize risk abroad. Should the bank account be hacked, criminals would only have access to funds in that account, and not your main savings account.

Travelers from certain visa-exempt countries will need travel authorization to enter 30 European countries, but not until late 2026.

What is ETIAS and how does it work?

ETIAS is a fully electronic process that allows and keeps track of visitors from those countries who aren’t required to have a visa to enter the Schengen Zone. It will apply to residents from more than 60 countries who have previously been able to cross the border visa-free.

The ETIAS travel authorization is not a visa – it’s more like a visa-waiver and is linked to your passport. If granted, this visa-waiver will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, a traveler can stay in the European country requiring ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Keep in mind, having an ETIAS travel authorization does not guarantee entry to those countries. You will still need to meet the other entry requirements a specific country may have.

When will ETIAS start?

The official start date has changed multiple times, but ETIAS is due to start after the Entry/Exit System (EES) is launched. EES is an automated system for registering non-EU nationals who are entering the EU for a short stay.

How to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization

Travelers will be asked to apply via the official ETIAS website or mobile app. Each applicant will undergo a detailed security check to determine their status for entry into any of the Schengen Zone countries. In many cases, applications are processed within minutes, but it can take up to 14 days if more information is requested, or up to 30 days if an interview is required.

Application for most travelers costs €7.

ETIAS works to identify any security threats by gathering information and updating data relating to a specific visitor to determine their suitability for entry in the EU.

It was designed by the EU to address terrorism and migration issues, tightening up borders and working to make travel within the member countries safer.

Along with decreasing security concerns and detecting potential threats, it is expected that the new ETIAS will also help:

Reduce procedures and application times

ETA: New entry requirement for the UK

The UK will not require an ETIAS travel authorization for entry. But as of January 8, 2025, travelers visiting the UK will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This applies to all travelers (including babies and children) visiting for less than six months.

The ETA acts as a pre-clearance for travel. It’s valid for two years and covers multiple trips. Applications can be made via the UK ETA app (strongly encouraged) or online. Processing takes around three working days, sometimes longer, so don’t wait until the last minute. The fee for applying is £10.

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets REAL ID security standards (meaning it has the REAL ID-compliant star marking in the upper corner).

All 50 US states, as well as Washington DC and the US territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands, are issuing REAL IDs. However, in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is an acceptable alternative.

Beginning May 7, 2025, every US state and territory resident will need to present REAL ID, EDL, or passport to board a commercial aircraft. Travelers without this identification will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. (This is true even if you have CLEAR Plus or TSA Precheck.)

Why is REAL ID now required?

The US government has set new federal standards for driver’s licenses and ID cards that are more consistent and secure.

The switch to this new form of ID was mandated by the REAL ID act, passed by Congress in 2005 in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission. The law was originally supposed to be implemented in 2008 but has been pushed back numerous times due to logistical challenges and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the time for enforcement has finally come.

How do I get REAL ID?

You can get REAL ID at your local driver’s licensing agency (DMV, BMV, etc.). The documents you’ll need vary from state to state but at minimum, they include documentation that shows:

Full legal name
Date of birth
Social Security Number
Two proofs of your current address
Lawful status (whether you are lawfully authorized to live permanently within the US)

Visit the website of your local DMV to find out if further documents are required.

It’s also highly recommended to make an appointment for your license renewal.

What if I don’t want a REAL ID?

Most states will allow you to apply for a standard driver’s license or other identification that is not REAL ID-compliant. But it’s best to be prepared in case you need to fly somewhere unexpectedly.

Can I use a passport instead?

A passport is an acceptable alternative to REAL ID. For domestic travel you will need REAL ID or a passport, but not both.

But you can’t use REAL ID for international travel. You will still need a passport for that, including cruises and crossing the border into Mexico and Canada.

What if I have recently gotten a new driver’s license?

If you’ve recently renewed your license, you may already have REAL ID. If so, your card will have a small gold or black star in one of the upper corners (or a bear, if you’re a California resident). In that case, you’re all set.

If you aren’t due for renewal for a while and don’t want to go through the process right now, you can use your passport instead. But if you don’t have a valid passport, you should make plans to get REAL ID as soon as possible.

More than half of the world's population owns a pet, and according to the UN, 1.4 billion people traveled internationally in 2024. Pets are our companions – members of the family, really – so it’s natural to want to take them along on vacation. But is it practical, let alone desirable for the pets?

When I inherited a cat from a suburban garden in Paris around 2014, I was immediately faced with the challenge of traveling with her back to my then home in Germany.

The trip was by car. It was a nightmare, but we survived. Cupcake, as I christened her, was not accustomed to travel, at already around 8 years old. She did not take to my idea of giving her a breath of fresh air en route in the Champagne vineyards, attached to a cat leash (what was I thinking?), and my partner and I still bear the scars today.

The situation was a far cry from friends who regularly travel around Europe with their cat sitting on their lap in the front passenger seat. But they started out early. Whether a dog or a cat, if you want to make good travel companions out of them, you must train them to travel while they’re young. But it still doesn't guarantee they will enjoy a road trip, let alone flying.

Cupcake became a seasoned, though not super enthusiastic, traveler over time. As a journalist and travel writer, I was shooting off to many places with her. But all of them were across a land border, not overseas. That is an entirely different ball game.

How to fly with a dog or cat

A big question will be finding an airline that allows pets onboard – and as carry-on or cargo. Some carriers, like American Airlines, don’t allow pets as carry-on to Europe – even though they do at home. Delta makes no exceptions for Transatlantic flights. But like many airlines, it has other rules such as maximum pet size – or minimum age – kennel dimensions. and the number of pets accepted on each flight.

“We have a first-come, first-serve policy for pets in the cabin,” Delta says. The fee is $200 one-way.

Air France puts any pet that weighs over 8kg/17.5lb in its carrier in the hold, as does Lufthansa. So check the fine print of your airline’s pet policies and fees before jumping in. Alaska Airlines will take your pets to Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas, among other places, but not to Belize or Guatemala, and recommends against Costa Rica travels because of the risk of screwworm.

Is it stressful for pets to fly?

Animal organizations advise against non-essential air travel for pets. But plenty of globetrotting dogs out there are ready to prove them wrong. Near or far, by plane, train, or car, one of the key considerations when deciding to journey with your pet will be whether they like it. Both dogs and cats will soon let you know with their behavior and body language.

Partly, it’s trial and error. I learned in time how to make car trips more comfortable for Cupcake, dealing with the motion sickness – the drooling, meowing, and pooping – with cat-calming treatments.

Vets say time-zone changes, noisy airports, and changes in diet and medications can make air travel stressful for your pets. Add to that confinement on the plane and altitude and pressure acclimatization.

Consult your vet as to what is best for your pet. You will also want to research the availability and quality of vet services at your destination.

Some people turn to pet travel consultants and transport services to make all the travel arrangements. But these are primarily for relocating, not vacationing, with pets. Others who can afford it choose charter options for flying with pets.

Traveling with pets on trains and other public transport

Once you get to your European destination, train travel with your pet will be a relative breeze, as will public transport, though it depends on which country.

Cupcake and I traveled regularly on the European rail network. Usually, I had to pay her way – around €15 a trip. Again, you must check the national rail at your intended destination for rules about cage size, animal weight, the need for leashes and muzzles, and bans on some dog breeds.

How to travel with a dog in a car

If you fancy taking your pooch on an international road trip, see how they take to car travel at home first. And prep well with the right travel gear – food, water, a dog seat belt and safey harness, and a booster seat – to keep your dog comfortable and protected. An unrestrained dog can cause distractions and could be seriously injured (or injure the driver or passengers) in an accident.

Also, plan on potty stops or take along portable pet toilets or pee pads – and any required meds for anxiety or nausea.

If traveling with a cat, similar harnesses and car seat belts are available (assuming your cat will tolerate a harness), or your kitty can ride in a hard-sided carrier, seat-belted into the back seat. For longer trips, you can place a litter box in the carrier, but the best option is to limit trips to a four or five-hour maximum each day.

International travel with pets: rules and requirements

The processes and paperwork for an American or Brazilian pet-cationing across continents to Europe are much the same as for a German on holiday with their pets in France. The EU rules for traveling with pets – specifically dogs, cats, and ferrets – apply to travel from outside the EU as well as within.

EU residents need an EU Pet Passport for their pet – which you can get from any authorized vet. The vet will check that your pet meets all the requirements: that it's been microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. A pet passport is valid for life as long as your pet's health information and vaccinations remain up to date.

If traveling from a non-EU country or territory, your pet will need an EU animal health certificate – this must be issued by a vet in the departure country no more than 10 days before your pet's arrival in Europe. It is valid for travel between EU countries for four months.

There may be other health rules depending on the country you're coming from – and going to. For example, if you're headed to Finland, Norway, Malta, or Ireland with your pooch, it must be treated for tapeworm infection one to five days before traveling.

The EU's Europa website has a handy tool for checking travel requirements by country. All the necessary treatments are ticked off on your pet's passport or EU animal health certificate.

There are set points of entry you must arrive at with your pets, but these are basically at every international airport in Europe. While many people report that authorities don’t end up checking their pet’s documents, they all advise sticking to the rules – apart from anything else, it’s not worth the risk of being turned back.

Where can I travel with my pets?

Many countries have similar rules to Europe for traveling with pets – microchips, rabies vaccinations, and pet ID. And that includes road trips between the US and Canada (the rules are less strict for Canadians visiting the US). If you have a place in mind, you need to immediately check the requirements for taking pets.

For some pet owners, there are definitely no-go countries – eliminated because of their distance as much as the difficulty of getting pets in. Australia is one of them unless you're coming from New Zealand and some other nearby islands. Even “compliant animals”, says the Government, which meet all the health conditions, will undertake “a minimum” 10-day quarantine when arriving from the UK, US, or other Group 3 countries. Whoops, there goes the vacation.

Bali and Jamaica are among the many other destinations with prohibitive quarantine times and costs for pet travel.

Pet-friendly accommodations and attractions

Finding a hotel isn’t your only concern once you cross the borders or oceans with your pet. After all, you’re not just going to dump your bags and pooch and go sightseeing, are you? If so, what was the point in bringing your furry companion along?

There are myriad pet-friendly accommodations and activities around the world, from pet-friendly cafes and restaurants in France to beaches in Croatia, pubs in the UK, and national parks in Canada and the US – both paradises for pet travel.

Europe has many pet-friendly small hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering options – particularly in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain – as do the UK, the US, and Canada. Groups like Accor and Marriott charge a pet cleaning fee, which varies between properties and countries but can be a bit steep – up to $150.

Airbnb says 27% of its listings are pet-friendly. Colombia, Brazil, India, and Chile top the list, followed by Austria, the UK, the US, Mexico, and Switzerland.

Travel with pets: weighing the options

If you want your pets to tag along, you might have to tailor the trip to them, and perhaps consider sticking closer to home.

Sure, we can get stressed about leaving our pets behind – and they can get anxious about their owners leaving. However, the stress and hassles of traveling overseas may outweigh those problems.

In the end, we have to listen to our pets. Where would they prefer to be – at home or away?

How to Travel Light: Essential Packing Tips

Packing is my superpower. I have traveled for a year with just a backpack and have done a week-long trip with a bag that fits under my airplane seat, more times than I can count. Lugging heavy, overpacked suitcases is no way to enjoy a trip.

Whenever possible, I carry-on. Carrying-on means less likelihood of a lost bag and travel insurance claim. And traveling light just makes it easier to get around.

Here are my top packing tips for traveling light.

Limit what you take
Use packing cubes
Minimize empty spaces
Pack merino clothing
Plan your outfits: mix and match, and layer

Limit what you take

The first time I went to Europe, I read “lay out everything you plan to take, then put away half.” Maybe that’s extreme, but the sentiment stuck. When traveling, we really don’t need as much as we think we do. And worst-case scenario, you can do laundry or buy what you forgot to pack.

But if you want to be practical and travel light, you have to make some tough decisions.

Shoes? At most you need:

a pair of sneakers or hiking shoes
a pair of flip flops or sandals
something that can be dressed up or down as needed, whether sneakers, heels, or something in between

No more than that.

Likewise with toiletries. Liquids are heavy, so be a toiletries minimalist. Bring only what you need, in travel-sized bottles. Unless you’re camping or staying in super cheap hostels, your accommodation will have soap, shampoo, conditioner, and a hair dryer. You’ll survive a few weeks without all the lotions and potions you’re used to at home. Just bring the basics.

Pack like you’re carrying on, even if you plan to check. Keep all your liquids under 100ml/3.4 oz in a quart-sized bag, and double-bag it in case something spills.

Use packing cubes

Packing cubes are a game changer. They help you organize your stuff into compartments, which makes things easier to find and makes re-packing much easier. Cubes come in multiple sizes. I use a standard rectangular one for most of my clothes and put bras and underwear in a longer, skinner cube.

Minimize empty spaces

Empty space is wasted space. To make the most of the space in your bag, you shouldn’t have a lot of empty space. Roll up socks and put them in your spare pair of shoes, which go in their own packing cube or pouch. If your suitcase has rails for the retractable handle, line either side with sleepwear or gym clothes (things you don’t mind being squished on the bottom).

Use your packing cubes to create a puzzle that all fits together. Try different combinations to find what fits best.

Pack merino clothing

Merino is magic. Made from the wool of sheep that graze in high country, merino wool is super fine, breathable, moisture-wicking, odor-resistant and not itchy. It’s not cheap but investing in a few pieces is worth it. Because of its odor resistance, you can wear a merino garment several times before it needs to be washed. That means you can pack a lot less. l pack a few merino T-shirts and long sleeves, and layer them as needed.

100% merino products are more expensive than blends, but the higher the merino content the better the garment. Brands like Icebreaker, Smartwool, Kathmandu, and Macpac are reliable. Be careful with online marketplaces advertising pure merino for $20 – that’s too good to be true.

Plan your outfits: mix and match, and layer

Lay out all your clothes before you put them in your bag. Consider neutral colors and patterns to maximize match potential. Can you wear multiple tops with multiple bottoms? Do your choices make sense layered on top of one another? If not, switch the unmatchable things out for things that do match.

Researching the destination. Are you traveling during wet season and need rain gear? Will you need a headscarf for mosques, temples, or churches?
A wrist or crossbody/neck strap for your phone
A scarf or neck gaiter to keep you warm on the plane and protect your neck from sun and wind
Flip flops or sandals in case of a gross shower or hotel room carpet
A lightweight windbreaker-like layer that can be rolled up and stuffed in the bottom of your bag
A headlamp, even if you’re not camping. They’re great to help you find something in the bottom of your bag or under your airplane seat, and if necessary, will be great to help you find your way in the dark while keeping your hands free (and saving your phone battery)
A roll-up reusable nylon grocery bag that can be used for groceries, dirty laundry, a wet bathing suit, etc.
A hat – something to protect yourself from the sun, or to keep your head warm in cold climates (and to rescue you in case of a bad hair day!)
A printed copy of your passport and/or driver’s license, and a bit of cash kept separate from your wallet or day bag, just in case

How to Renew Your Passport: Tips for Travelers

Passport renewal can be a dreaded task for frequent and novice travelers alike. I pretty much travel full-time so there’s never a convenient moment for me to renew my passport, especially when I’m getting close to my last page in the book. Being without a passport always leaves me feeling a bit nervous – how long will the new one take? Will it arrive within the estimated time and therefore, in time for my next scheduled international trip?

I finally bit the bullet and renewed my almost-full passport at the beginning of this year. It felt safer to renew it when I was back stateside and still had a few pages left rather than risk filling it up while being on the road. The expedited mail-in option was straightforward and arrived in less time than anticipated – which is not guaranteed to be the case but was a relief for this nomadic traveler.

How long is a passport good for and when should I renew mine?

There are a few reasons to renew your passport: it's about to expire, your pages are full, or you’ve lost your passport. Passports are typically good for ten years if you're 16 or older when it's issued. However, in the US, UK, and Canada, passports are only valid for five years if you are under 16 (under 15 in Australia).

Without any special circumstances such as a lost, stolen, or damaged passport (accidents do happen!), you should renew yours when it’s either about six months from expiration or close to being full.

Many countries won’t let you in if you have less than six months before your passport expires – which is why you should keep a close eye on the expiration date. It won’t be a fun surprise to board a flight and be denied entry for your planned vacation! (Also, if you have to cancel your trip because of an expired passport, the cancellation likely won't be covered by travel insurance.)

If you fill up your pages before the ten years are up, you will need to apply for a new passport earlier than the expiration date. Keep in mind that many countries require two to four blank pages for entry /exit stamps and visas. Some airlines won’t let you board, and some countries won’t allow you to enter without a few blank pages. Unfortunately, adding extra pages to your passport is no longer an option so if it’s getting close to full, it is best to renew your passport as soon as possible.

If you don’t have special circumstances to consider, there are a few basic steps to follow to get your next passport in hand.

What do I need to do to renew my passport?

For US citizens, there are three ways to renew your passport: by mail, in person, or online. All these start at the US Department of State’s passport section.

Renewing online

Renewing online has only recently become available and is currently in the process of a trial stage. If you meet the necessary requirements as listed on the US Department of State’s website, online renewal might be the most convenient option for you. Online renewal works for tourist passports. Unfortunately, diplomatic passports and other special issuances don’t qualify for online renewal, and you must have the passport in hand (i.e. it hasn’t been lost or stolen). American citizens living outside of the US are ineligible for the online process.

Once you verify that you are eligible to renew your passport online, you can create your account and start your application. You will need a new photo, which can be uploaded online in the application system.

Because the online system is in the testing stage, online application slots are only available in limited slots at midday eastern time each day. You can try another day if you can’t start your application on that day – or simply renew by mail instead.

Renewing by mail

Another way to renew your passport is by mail. This is a great option if you don’t meet all the requirements for online renewal, or if you want to expedite the process. Once you confirm that you meet the requirements, you can download the application, fill it out, and print it. Along with your completed form, you’ll also need to mail in a photo and your current passport.

Renewing in person

Renewing your passport in person should be your last option and is saved for emergency cases. You must make an appointment at a passport agency. If you are traveling within 14 calendar days, you can book an appointment at a passport center to renew your passport. However, if you’ll also need a foreign visa for your trip, then your appointment will have to be within 28 days of your trip.

Regardless of the renewal method you choose, you will need to take a new photo. Make sure your photo meets the requirements, such as being a color photo and taken within the last 6 months.

The cost to renew your passport book is USD $130. If you’d like to get a wallet-sized passport card as well, the cost is an extra $30. Passport cards are not valid for international air travel and only work land and sea travel from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and Caribbean countries.

How long does it take to renew your passport?

For US citizens, the typical processing time to renew a passport is 6-8 weeks. This can fluctuate during popular travel times, such as over the winter and summer holidays. You need to consider the mailing time as well, which isn’t included in the 6-8 week estimate and can add at least a few days. The Department of State updates current renewal times.

If your passport renewal is super time sensitive, you can select the expedited passport renewal service, which takes an estimated 2-3 weeks. Remember that expedited services are only available via mail-in renewal and cost an additional $60.

How to get a new passport if your current passport is expired

Renewing an expired passport is straightforward and not too different from the regular process. However, if your passport was issued more than 15 years ago – meaning that it expired five or more years ago – you aren’t eligible to renew your passport. Instead, you will need to apply for a new one.

What is the process if my passport is lost or stolen?

Losing a passport, whether by accident or by theft, can create a stressful situation, especially if it happens while you’re traveling. The first thing you should do is report your lost passport, which can be done online, by mail, or in person when you’re replacing your passport. If your lost passport is also expired, there is no need to report it because it isn’t valid for international travel.

If you report your missing passport online, the system will also give you the option to apply for a new passport, directly linking you to the forms to fill out. In limited circumstances, you may also apply for an emergency passport, which is valid for one year or less. Emergency passports are issued in circumstances like having your passport stolen.

How to renew your passport from abroad

The process to apply for a new passport if you’re outside the US differs from country to country. In most cases, you’ll need to apply in person at the US embassy or consulate. Check the US embassy page for the country from which you’ll be applying for country-specific details.

If you’re applying from Canada, you can skip the trip to the embassy and apply via mail. This applies in both cases of standard and expedited passport renewals.

The process is the same whether you’re simply traveling abroad or living abroad as a resident of another country.

How to renew your passport if you’re not a US resident

Passport renewal looks a bit different for every country, although some general rules do still apply like renewing your passport six months before it expires or if it has less than two to four blank pages. It is best to check your country’s government website for the specific process.

UK citizens can renew online or mail in a paper form. The processing time is typically three weeks, although the government also offers a fast-track service. It costs £88.50 to renew online and £100 to renew passports with a paper form.

Canadian citizens can renew via mail or in-person, depending on the timeframe in which the passport is needed. If you need to renew your passport within 10-20 business days, you can renew via mail or in person at a Service Canada Center or passport office. If you need an “express” renewal (2-9 days), you’ll need to renew your passport at a passport office with express service. In the event that your passport renewal is urgent (needed by the end of the next business day), you’ll need to go to a passport office with urgent service. In addition to new photos, you’ll also need two references to renew your Canadian passport. A five-year adult passport costs CAN$120 and a ten-year adult passport costs CAN$160.

Australian citizens who meet all the criteria can renew their passports online. If online access isn’t possible, you can call 131 232 to have a form sent to you. You will need to send in two photos with the completed forms. Plan for passports to take a minimum of six weeks for renewal, although in special circumstances you can apply for expedited renewal for an additional cost. A ten-year passport for adults costs AUD$398.

Entering the US can be an intimidating and tiring experience for foreign travelers. I was apprehensive when I flew into Los Angeles last year for my first US trip as an adult, anticipating long lines at immigration and stern questioning about my reasons for visiting.

Instead, I breezed through LA airport. The immigration officer who checked my passport explained I’d been lucky to complete this process so quickly – especially given I’m not a member of Global Entry, the US Government program which lets travelers fast-track their security screening upon arrival in the US.

What is the US Trusted Traveler Program?

Global Entry is one of five services in the US Government’s Trusted Traveler Program, which aims to make it quicker and simpler for people to move into and out of the US, as well as between its states. Its services most relevant to international travelers are Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.

How does Global Entry work?

Global Entry aims to simplify customs and immigration processing for pre-approved, low-risk travelers arriving at US airports from overseas. Such travelers need not join the masses in often slow-moving immigration queues. Instead, they:

Proceed through separate Global Entry lanes at more than 70 US airports, including tourist hubs like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Miami
Slide their passport into a digital reader at an automated Global Entry kiosk, have their photo taken, and their fingerprints scanned
Complete a customs declaration via the kiosk touchscreen, which prints a receipt that the traveler shows to security to enter the arrivals hall

Who is eligible for Global Entry?

Global Entry is only available to people over the age of 18. They must also be citizens of one of these 14 nations: Argentina, Brazil, Bahrain, Colombia, Germany, India, Netherlands, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, and Mexico.

Before being approved for Global Entry, applicants must go through a strict background check and then attend an in-person interview. Most travelers complete that interview prior to departing for the US, at a Global Entry Enrollment Center in their home country. It is also possible for Global Entry applicants who passed the background check to do their interview at the airport upon arrival in the US.

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck lets people transiting through US airports access fast-track security lanes which don’t require them to take off belts, shoes, or jackets, or to remove laptops and liquids of less than 100ml from their luggage. Only US citizens and US permanent residents can apply for TSA PreCheck as a standalone service. Citizens of partner countries who are enrolled in the NEXUS or SENTRI Trusted Traveler programs can also participate in TSA PreCheck.

And both foreigners and US citizens get TSA PreCheck membership as part of the package when they join Global Entry. This means they can not only move through US airports faster on arrival, but also during departure from US airports on domestic or international flights.

How does Global Entry differ from TSA PreCheck and CLEAR Plus?

Global Entry streamlines your passage through US airports upon arrival in the country. It costs USD $120 for a five-year membership.
TSA PreCheck offers a simpler departure experience from the US.A membership costs UDS $78 for five years.
CLEAR Plus is an alternative to TSA PreCheck, but is run by a private company, not the US Government.
Like TSA PreCheck, CLEAR Plus offers easier security screenings when departing from US airports. Instead of lining up to show airport staff your ID, you use a faster-moving CLEAR Plus channel where you’re identified via eye or fingerprint scanning. The downsides of CLEAR Plus: it’s not available to non-US citizens and residents, and it costs USD $189 per year.

How to appy for Global Entry

Create your personal account on the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) website. Click the “Create an account” button and enter your email address.
You’ll then be sent an email – open it, click on the verification link within, and follow the instructions for creating a personal TTP account.
Once your account is created, you’ll see an option to apply for Global Entry. In this application you will need to provide personal information such as age, place of birth, citizenship status, employment status, your passport data, any criminal record, and details of any previously rejected applications for US Visas or entry permits.
During the subsequent interview, which typically lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, you’ll be asked to present ID documents, and to explain your reasons for visiting the US.

A shorter, less stringent interview is required to get approved for TSA PreCheck. This in-person appointment takes roughly 10 minutes, during which the staff member will take your photo, scan your fingerprints, confirm your ID documents, and take your payment for the application.

What is a Known Traveler Number?

The most important detail of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership is your Known Traveler Number (KTN). This is the nine or 10-digit number assigned specifically to you once your membership to one of these services is approved.

When booking domestic or international flights via US airports, you must type your number into the KTN box during the reservation process. This will ensure that you’re listed as being TSA PreCheck or Global Entry-approved on your boarding pass, which will give you access to the fast-track lanes.

Drawbacks of Global Entry

The only downsides to Global Entry membership are the cost – $120 for five years – and the slow application process. After completing your application and interview, it can take anywhere from a month to almost a year before you receive membership.

Depending on where you live, there can also be significant delays in booking the in-person interview. Beware, also, that the membership fee is non-refundable if your application is rejected.

How is technology evolving Global Entry?

Phone apps, self-service security stations, and facial recognition are being used in US airports to improve Global Entry and TSA PreCheck services. In 2024 the US Government launched its Global Entry app, which lets members submit their passport details and photo so that, on arrival in the US, they can skip the Global Entry lane and proceed straight to the final airport security checkpoint.

Departure security processes are also being updated. Self-servicing screening technology, being slowly rolled out at US airports, allows TSA PreCheck members to use kiosks where they can scan their ID and carry-on luggage by themselves. Also being gradually implemented at more and more US airports is TSA PreCheck technology which uses facial recognition to identify travelers, instead of ID documents.

Researching, understanding, and recognizing the symptoms of altitude sickness can help you stay calm and confident, trusting your guide and your training process.

Understanding altitude sickness and prevention

Altitude sickness, including Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can occur at elevations above 8,200ft (2,500m) due to decreased oxygen levels. This condition can be fatal and is the primary cause of medical evacuations in the Himalayas.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) - Broad term for altitude sickness. Symptoms include headache (worse when bending over), nausea/vomiting, fatigue, and a general hangover-like feeling.
High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) - Life-threatening emergency. Symptoms include ataxia (stumbling), confusion, lethargy, and brain swelling, often with AMS symptoms.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) - Life-threatening emergency. Symptoms include cough, difficulty breathing with mild exertion, and fluid in the lungs, often with AMS symptoms.

AMS is the most common, often affecting trekkers who ascend too quickly and who don’t allow enough time to acclimatize. Luckily, gradual altitude training and proper acclimatization can greatly prevent severe altitude illnesses and ensure a more enjoyable and safer trekking experience.

Benefits of elevation training and an actionable training plan

Preparing for a trek at high altitude is more physically demanding, primarily due to the thin air you’ll face at higher elevations. Expect more severe shortness of breath and increased fatigue compared to lower elevations.

While not everyone has access to high-altitude training areas, you can effectively prepare by creating a training program combining cardiovascular fitness, endurance training, and strength training at a lower altitude.

Exercises that increase your heart rate like running or cycling are great for building cardiovascular endurance. Squats, lunges, and calf raises are great for strengthening your leg muscles. Additionally, going on plenty of training hikes and incorporating a solid core training routing is vital as preparation for carrying heavy backpacks for long periods.

Those who have access to training or living at high altitudes can enhance their body's ability to acclimatize to less oxygen, improving aerobic fitness and endurance, and reducing the risk of altitude sickness. However, it is not essential – I’ve completed a few treks above 19,000ft (5,790m) after training at sea level.

What is more crucial is being physically fit, mentally prepared, and following a good acclimatization profile during your trek.

Essential gear for high-altitude expeditions

The higher you plan to go, the more essential – and often more expensive – your gear becomes. But you'll be grateful for every penny spent when you're standing on top of the world

Here's a basic essentials checklist to get you started for trekking at high altitude (think the Kilimanjaro trek):

Comfortable, fitted hiking backpack
Worn-in trekking boots
Membrane jacket (Goretex or similar)
Packable down layers
Sunglasses
Headlamp
Lightweight, sweat-wicking base layers

Tourist visas are important legal documents you must take seriously, or risk getting kicked out at your holiday destination’s border before your holiday has begun. Here’s what you need to know.

Passport vs visa – what's the difference?

While passports have been around since ancient times, visas granting authorization to travel emerged as important documents little more than a century ago. While your passport is your legal document to prove who you are and certify your citizenship, the visa is your ticket to enter a country as a foreigner under certain conditions.

Be aware governments can and do change the rules around visas at a moment's notice – in some cases, travelers have arrived at their destination to find the rules changed while they were mid-air.

While you can’t prevent a last-minute rule change, it helps to understand how visas work and what you might need to know before you apply for them. For example, many countries (such as Schengen visa countries) require proof of a certain level of travel insurance cover for specific events to obtain a visa.

Visa essentials: How to apply for a travel or tourist visa

Obtaining and completing travel visa forms

To find the form you’re after, start with the government website of the country you’re planning on visiting – that’s where you’ll most likely find all the information you need about visas. Depending on your country of citizenship, you may not need a visa at all to visit a particular destination, or you may be able to get a visa on arrival (meaning, one that is issued at the port of entry at your destination). For example, US passport holders can currently visit more than 180 countries without obtaining a travel visa ahead of time.

If you do need a visa, there are two common ways to apply:

Online: Many countries are increasingly offering visas online – now you can apply for, be granted, and have your visa recorded against your passport details without ever filling out a paper form. Check with your country of destination if they offer this service. A quick scan of your passport (by person or machine) when you get to your destination will reveal whether you have the right to enter a country and how long you’re allowed to stay.

In writing: Some countries still do things in writing – that means obtaining an application form from the local embassy, office, or online, completing it and then submitting it. You may have to attend an interview and submit your passport with the application. Timings range from weeks to months for approvals and vary depending on how busy the embassy or office is. If successful, you’ll be issued official passport stickers or stamps as proof of a successful visa application. Make sure you allow enough time for them to process the visa as you can’t always pay for it to be fast-tracked.

Choosing the right visa

It’s important to choose the right kind of visa for your planned activities. For example, if you’re planning on working at your destination, you’ll need a work visa. Planning on studying? Then you’ll probably need a student visa. Selecting the wrong visa type may see you turned back at the border, held in detention, or sent back home with nothing to show for your getaway. Take the time to read the eligibility criteria for all visas and ask questions if you’re not sure on what is required or what they mean.

Make sure your passport is valid and up to date

No matter what kind of visa you’ve been granted, be sure your passport has several blank pages and at least six months left before it expires, or you may not be allowed to depart your home country. Also, some countries like the US require you to have a passport with an electronic chip to issue visas under their visa waiver program. If in doubt, play it safe and renew your passport.

Supporting information and reference letters for your visa

The information travelers supply when they apply for a visa allows officials to control who comes in (including their health, wealth, and intentions) and what they can do while they’re there.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a change in the visa rules for many countries. An increasing number require tourists to show proof of travel insurance coverage to get a visa. Cruise ships typically also require passengers to show proof of travel insurance before boarding.

Where and how long you plan to stay

You may need to provide proof of your financial ability to look after yourself for the chosen length of stay, where you’re going, any job offers that your visa is dependent on, or confirmed study at a certain institution. Make sure you have all this information to hand before you submit your application and don’t leave anything out – insufficient information is one of the many reasons visa applications are refused and you may not get a second chance to supply that information later to prove your eligibility.

Letter of invitation

Some countries require you to be invited to the country, and have proof of it, before you apply for a visa. Speak to a travel agent about how you can obtain these or check the relevant government website. Sometimes it’s as simple as booking some travel and accommodation in advance and the letter will follow. Sometimes, a letter from a relative who lives in country you’re visiting or from, say, the organizer of an event you’re planning to attend will suffice. Sometimes it’s a little more official than that and unless you’re a diplomat you probably won’t be getting that visa.

Travel tip: Be aware that travel insurance companies may not cover you for cancellation or trip interruption due to an unsuccessful visa application – consider waiting to book your travel until you’ve gotten confirmation that your visa application is successful, or at the very least that your travel arrangements are fully refundable.

Understanding visa waivers and transit visas

Visa waivers

As a gesture of goodwill, some countries have mutual agreements that allow citizens to come and go between them for holidays, or even work, without obtaining a visa. In some cases, that still means registering for travel but it’s a quick and easy process (usually online), and travel is often valid for much longer than a typical visa. If you come from a country that’s excluded from a visa waiver program, all may not be lost, but you’ll need to apply for a normal visa to match your plans.

Transit visas

Transit visas are designed for travelers passing through a country to get to another destination, and not intending to stay or visit in that country. These can be valid for up to 10 days, or for as little as 24 hours. If you have a stopover but won’t be leaving the airport, find out whether you still need to apply for a visa. Some countries won’t allow you to continue your journey without a transit visa in place, and you might find yourself having to return home at your own expense.

If you’re booking flights with the help of a travel agent, double check any visa advice you receive and take a worst-case approach. A delayed flight that has you missing your connecting flight will make you glad you went to the trouble of applying for a transit visa.

Overstaying your visa and what to do if it happens

Let’s say you’ve turned up at the border ready to exit but it turns out you were having so much fun on holidays that you got your dates wrong, and you’ve inadvertently overstayed your visa. What happens now?

Depending on the country you’re in, you may be able to talk your way out of it, or pay a small fine. But in some countries, it may lead to detention, deportation and/or being banned temporarily or permanently from re-entering the country

What happens if you overstay your visa?

If you can avoid staying longer in a country than your visa permits, do whatever it takes to do so. The penalties can be harsh and impact your travels well into the future. Even if you overstay on medical reasons, you may still find you’re banned from that country in the future.

Generally, the longer you overstay, the longer the period you won’t be allowed back. Fines and imprisonment can also be expected in some countries, even if overstaying your visa by as little as an hour or two. The legal expense and hassle involved in getting yourself out of jail just aren’t worth it.

How and when to extend your visa

Many countries recognize that plans change and allow travelers to extend their tourist visa if they want to stay a little longer – or have to. Just how long that extension is, and whether it’s granted at all, depends on where you are in the world as well as your home country. Apply as soon as you know you might need it.

If you can’t leave a country due to border closures or limited return flights home, there may be temporary visas available to you – and they may even allow you to work. The lingering effects of COVID-19 have led to a range of special visa conditions being introduced throughout much of the world but be sure to allow plenty of time to apply for an extension or special visa.

What to do if your tourist visa is rejected

There are all kinds of reasons your visa application may be refused, including having previously overstayed your visa as mentioned above, and not all of them may seem fair if you’re given a reason at all. Not many countries welcome people who have a criminal record or have previous visa/immigration violations, and some countries will refuse a visa application for such reasons as:

Your passport is damaged or shows too much wear and tear.
Failing to show you have booked accommodation in the destination country.
Not providing all the requested documentation with your application.
You’ve visited a country the destination country considers hostile, or you’re from a ‘high-risk’ country yourself.
You’re not considered of good moral character.

What’s “good moral character”, you may ask? That depends on the country making the decisions. Even if you don’t have a criminal record, if you’ve been subject to a domestic violence order, have failed to file or pay taxes, are guilty of adultery, or have violated controlled substance laws, a government may consider they have reason enough to refuse you entry.

Traveling With Tattoos: Navigating Cultural Differences

Over the last 16 years, I’ve been on the road full time, have made a career out of traveling and have traveled to nearly 100 countries. When I first started my journey, I only had one small tattoo but today I am fairly covered in tattoos and some of these, such as my finger tattoos, are not easy to hide.

I personally have not experienced any tattoo discrimination while traveling but I have found many people I meet are very interested in my tattoos. For me, my tattoos each tell a story and are in fact closely linked to my travels as I have been inked in a dozen countries and, on several occasions, have traveled specifically to meet with a tattoo master.

However, tattoo acceptance can vary within different cultures. Here are my tips for navigating cultural challenges when traveling with tattoos.

Visiting mosques with a tattoo

I’ve been to many mosques with my tattoos and haven’t encountered any problems. Obviously, when one visits a mosque, it is polite to cover up, so it’s not like I’m flashing my ink via a tank top. I haven’t heard of any tattooed travelers who did cover up encountering issues in mosques. But bear in mind, there are certain tattoo taboos you need to be aware of.

Traveling to Japan with a tattoo

The most common example is in Japan where, until 1948, tattoos were illegal, and the social stigma against tattoos still exists. Traditionally, tattoos in Japan were only reserved for members of the Yakuza (the so-called Japanese Mafia, except nastier and less pasta-loving), and so those sporting inked skin would be assumed to be a part of the criminal underworld and may face discrimination.

So, can you show tattoos in Japan? In general, yes, especially in big cities, but you might not be allowed into certain places. When I first visited Japan in 2014, many onsens had signs prohibiting the entrance of tattooed individuals. When I recently revisited the country in September 2023, I visited several onsens and didn’t see any signs relating to tattoos. However, other recent travelers have come across onsens that prohibit tattoos, especially in less-touristed areas. If that’s the case, it’s important to respect the local custom and find another option. Some onsens may offer a sleeve or bandage to wear, if your tattoos are small enough to be covered.

Face and neck tattoos

Planning trips with tattoos is not especially difficult unless you are inked in very prominent locations. If you have face or neck tattoos, especially if you have opted to go with something controversial, you may face some challenges.

When I’m not traveling, I live in Bali, and while the island is known for being pretty liberal and forward-thinking, there are bars and clubs that forbid the entrance of those with face or neck tattoos. I kind of understand the reasoning behind this as often face tattoos appear quite intimidating and are associated with gangs and crime. While I’m sure there are plenty of lovely individuals with face tattoos, if you are traveling with such a prominent tattoo, you will likely encounter some strange looks and potentially some discrimination.

Traveling with a tattoo of the Buddha

There is one country where you have to be really careful when it comes to tattoos and that is Sri Lanka. In recent years, some travelers have been arrested and deported for having visible Buddha tattoos. It isn’t specifically against the law to have a Buddha tattoo, but authorities are sensitive to any perceived disrespect of their God, and fair enough. Sri Lanka is one of my favorite countries to go backpacking; it’s super laid back, relaxed, and friendly. But if you do have a Buddha tattoo, I strongly recommend playing it safe and covering it up while traveling in this part of the world, or Thailand for that matter.

In Thailand, you will often spot signs informing travelers that “Buddha is for respecting; Not decoration, not tattoo” and this is another country where one must be aware that tattoo acceptance varies across different cultures. In general, Thais have no problem with tattoos and in fact Sak Yant tattoos remain an important part of the culture of Buddhist monks. However, it can be deemed as incredibly impolite to tattoo a culture’s God across your chest. If you do choose to do this, I recommend ensuring you get this tattoo somewhere that’s easy to cover up.

Tips for respectful tattoo display in foreign countries

While in the past, there were legitimate challenges for tattooed travelers, these days most cultures are pretty accepting and accustomed to travelers with ink. On my own journeys around the world, my tattoos have often worked as a great ice breaker as people want to know where I got them and what they stand for.

It is important that we respect local customs when traveling, though. That comes down to covering up when entering religious places or cultural heritage sites. This is obviously much more challenging if you have face or neck tattoos but even then, these can be covered using a scarf or a buff.

If, however, you have a Buddha tattoo on your face… well, maybe you should just avoid Sri Lanka and Thailand. Ultimately, you have to understand that you are a guest in somebody else’s country and while you might not agree with how they view tattooed travelers you have to act with respect. Don’t become a diva and start shouting at some poor guy who’s just trying to do his job by ensuring people follow the cultural norms when entering a place of worship or cultural significance.

The budget airline industry is having its much-deserved “moment” in 2024. Low-cost airlines such as Spirit fly Airbus planes, while the industry’s top players fly Boeing jets. It’s no secret that Boeing planes have recently had their fair share of mechanical problems. The decline of Boeing has set the stage for budget airlines to ramp up business from cost-conscious travelers.

The advantages and disadvantages of budget air travel

I’ve flown budget airlines for more than two decades. Though you won’t exactly be traveling in style, nothing beats an airline ticket for less than the cost of an upscale dinner.

Take the budget route and you’ll save money while flying on a relatively safe Airbus plane. Moreover, budget airlines also fly to more remote airports than the industry’s top dogs. However, the budget route isn’t without flaws.

Most budget airlines offer few, if any, amenities – often no more than a beverage (typically water) and a rare bag of chips or pretzels. Prepare for the bare-bones service ahead of time by adding a couple of packaged snacks to your carry-on bag, and you’ll find your trip is that much more enjoyable.

How to avoid luggage fees and seat-selection charges

Budget airlines make their money through fees, many of which most travelers are unaware of until it’s too late. You can avoid luggage fees by strategically packing a carry-on bag instead of loading up one or several suitcases as stowaways in the belly of the plane. Be aware that some budget airlines, such as Spirit, charge even more money for checking bags at the airport desk instead of through the online check-in process.

Some budget airlines charge extra for seat selection. For example, reserving a window seat can cost an extra fee. Selecting a seat toward the front of the plane for faster deboarding or more legroom also has the potential to cost more.

Unless you desperately want to see the world from a plane window or depart faster than others, paying extra for a specific seat isn’t worth it.

Other hidden fees to be aware of

Checking bags and midflight snacks/beverages are only two potential budget airline costs to be aware of. If you aren’t 100% sure you will follow through with your trip, consider paying extra for flight cancellation insurance. Fees are also applicable for changing a flight instead of outright cancelling it.

Some budget airlines even charge extra for those who don’t check in on the web before the flight. Checking in online before reaching the airport is much more efficient as it creates a convenient phone-based digital boarding pass. Wait to check in when you are at the airport, and you might end up paying an unnecessary fee including extra for a printed boarding pass.

There is also the potential to pay more for a budget airline ticket when booking a flight using a PayPal or a credit card. Read the fine print, and you’ll find that paying with some such options often adds a couple more dollars. The additional fee is attributable to the cost of doing business with PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, etc. Consider using a debit card to buy your budget flight; you might sidestep such fees.

Changing the details of your reservation can also spur an additional cost. For example, changing your name or other information on the flight ticket might trigger additional charges so be sure to check the entirety of your information before completing the reservation.

Now that we’ve detailed all the potential fees for flying a budget airline, it is time to do the math. Add up the fees detailed above, and you’ll find that paying for such extraneous items can equal the cost of a standard airline flight. But if you pick and choose only a couple high-priority amenities, you’ll find flying budget is much more economically efficient.

Budget airlines prioritize smaller airports

In my travels, I’ve found that many budget airlines capture market share by efficiently addressing the market's shortcomings. Plenty of the industry’s top airlines rarely frequent or completely ignore smaller airports simply because of the lack of demand.

Budget airlines have filled the small airport travel route niche, often bypassing the major airports to focus on those with fewer travelers. Avoiding the major airports helps reduce costs, yet this approach presents transit challenges for money-conscious flyers.

Be prepared to take a lengthy car, bus, or train ride into the city after arriving at a small, remote airport. Such transit costs money, meaning you’ll have to factor in the additional cost when booking your flight.

Every budget traveler should know some low-cost airlines don’t indicate where smaller airports are located, meaning the onus is on you to get directions, including transportation to and from the airport and your intended destination after arrival.

Prepare accordingly and your budget flight will pay off

I've found flying low-cost airlines is a massive net positive if you keep the trip cost within reason using a bare-bones approach, while factoring in the potential cost for transportation from a remote airport to your destination.

When in doubt, run the numbers. Compare the cost of a standard airline round trip to that of a budget airline with a couple amenities added in, and you’ll find low-cost airlines are significantly cheaper.

Editor’s note: One other potential downfall of budget airlines is bankruptcy (it does sometimes happen). Keep in mind your travel insurance policy may not offer coverage if your airline becomes insolvent.

The boots are also helpful if you’re going to be walking for several hours a day or covering a considerable distance.

If you’re walking flat and easy trails, your regular trail or running shoes with decent tread may do just fine.

Ankle support: Trust me, the last thing you want is a twisted ankle miles away from civilization. Look for boots with high collars that provide excellent ankle support.

Snowshoes

Snowshoes are indispensable for winter hiking, snow trekking, and even some types of mountaineering.

The shoes work by distributing your weight over a larger surface area so you don’t sink deeply into the snow. In turn, they make it less strenuous and safe to enjoy your winter activities.

When you're trekking through deep snow or icy terrains, traditional footwear just won't cut it. Here are the key features that make a difference.

Binding system: A secure binding system is crucial for attaching your boots to the snowshoes. Look for models with easy-to-adjust yet secure bindings.
Crampons: These are the spikes or cleats on the bottom of the snowshoe. A good set of crampons provides the traction you need on icy or packed snow.

How to Avoid Bedbugs When You’re Traveling

Unless you commit to carrying your own bedding when you travel (hello, van life?), you will have to sleep in beds and sit in chairs and seats on planes, trains and buses, that have previously been occupied for long periods of time by many, many others. And it doesn't matter where you travel.

According to the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we can expect to encounter bed bugs anywhere in the world.

Although typically, it has been assumed that bedbugs are a bigger problem in developing countries where hygiene is harder to control, in recent years bedbugs have been part of a rapid spread in the USA, Canada, the UK and parts of Europe.

At the time of writing, Paris, France was experiencing an outbreak of bedbugs during Fashion Week that made it to the pages of Time, Forbes, CNN and the New York Times. With the Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games set to kick off in less than a year, authorities in Paris are said to be implementing urgent plans to eradicate the biting pests well ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

Annoyingly, bedbugs aren’t just confined to hostels or hotel beds, they can also be found on bedding and beds on planes, cruise ships, trains and buses, too. Don’t panic. Bed bugs are not known to spread disease. While they might leave you with a bite that itches, few people will have a severe allergic reaction that may need medical attention.

Feeling itchy? Aside from waiting for local governments to implement anti-bedbug strategies, what can you do to minimize the risk of being on the biting end of a bedbug when you’re traveling?

Avoiding bed bugs before you travel

Even before you head off, you can help minimize bedbug activity. Consider traveling with a hard-sided case or pack which is harder for bedbugs to infiltrate.
Pack clothes in ziplock plastic bags and if you’re only on a short stay, leave your clothes in the case
Consider carrying your own sleeping bag liner and pillow slips.
Check ahead with your accommodation to see if they have a bedbug policy around stopping them in the first place and controlling them.

Avoiding bed bugs while traveling

Use a luggage rack for your case or backpack that is off the floor, and harder for bedbugs to reach.
Check for signs in the room before unpacking and settling in.
Bedbugs like to hide in the creases and folds of fabrics. They can wait for a long time before needing to bite someone for their meal of blood.
According to the CDC, “Bed bugs have been shown to be able to travel over 100 feet in a night but tend to live within 8 feet of where people sleep”.
Bedbugs leave tell-tale signs behind – poo, basically – which resemble little black dots. Always pull back the sheets and have a good look at the mattress, before moving onto the pillows, the pillow slips and the top sheets and other bedding.
The bedbugs themselves are brownish and are only a few millimeters long. Their eggs look like small grains of rice (gag).
If you’re bitten, the bite mark might not show up for a few hours or even days, depending on the person.
If you find signs of bedbugs, tell your accommodation provider straight away, you might want to ask to change rooms, and floors or to check out.

Avoiding bed bugs when you get home

Unpack in the laundry or bathroom, shaking out your clothes carefully before putting them straight into the washing machine.
Drying on the highest heat can help eradicate, and if not dry or steam cleaning should work.
If possible, store your luggage somewhere other than your bedroom to avoid any possibility of transferring bedbugs from your accommodation to your bed.

How to Look After a Car When You’re on a Road Trip

Buying a cheap, used car and heading off into the sunset is as American as Ford. Before you commit, get the vehicle inspected by a mechanic to make sure it has no major issues. Here are some simple skills you should learn to keep you rolling.

How to change a tire

In many ways, changing a tire is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Watch out for traffic.

Get off the road as much as possible, while keeping the car on a level, firm surface. Never change a tire on a hill or slope. Place the car in park and engage the emergency brake. Ideally, you’ll have some emergency triangles like these to warn other motorists.

Most cars come with a jack stored somewhere in the rear near the spare tire. A jack typically has two, detachable parts, a crank and the jack itself. The crank may have a socket on one end or the socket may be a third, separate tool. It may also have a flat end for prying off the hubcap if needed.

Check the car’s manual to see where the jack needs to contact the frame. No manual? Google it. Get it wrong and you risk having the jack fail.

Chock the tires you aren’t changing with rocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Use the socket to “break” the tension (loosen) on the lug nuts on the damaged tire, but do not remove them. Do this before you jack the car up.

Raise the jack until the damaged tire can spin freely. Use the socket to remove the lug nuts entirely.

Remove the bad tire. Place the spare onto the bolts and tighten the nuts by hand. Use the socket to fully tighten them in a star pattern. Tighten a nut, then the one opposite that nut, moving around until they’re all tight. That keeps the wheel properly aligned.

Your spare is likely a flimsy “donut” that cannot handle highway speeds. Get the damaged tire fixed pronto.

How to jump-start a car

A dead battery is the worst but it’s easy to fix. Keep an eye on it, though. A depleted battery could be a sign of a failing alternator or a failing battery. Take your vehicle to an auto parts store like O’Reilly’s or Napa. They’ll test it for free.

Never let the jumper cable clamps touch each other
Never bridge a battery’s terminal posts.

Here are the steps:

Make sure all battery posts are free of corrosion. A wire brush works best
Turn the good car off and connect the positive clamp (generally red or not black) to the positive post on the good car’s battery. Make sure the negative clamps (always black) aren’t touching any metal
Connect the positive clamp to the positive post on the bad battery
Connect the negative clamp to the negative post on the good battery
Connect the negative clamp to a bare piece of metal on the dead car. The owner’s manual may suggest the best spot for this.
Turn the good car on and let it run for five minutes
Try to start the dead car. No luck? Make sure the clamps are securely connected
Once the dead car starts, remove the clamps in reverse order, being careful to not let them touch.

If you plan to be far from other vehicles, carry a portable battery like this one designed specifically for jumping car batteries.

Check the car’s fluids

Vehicles, like us, need to stay hydrated. It’s a good idea to check the oil and coolant frequently, especially if you’re driving an older vehicle.

Oil

Release the car’s hood. A latch on the hood itself keeps it from opening all the way. Reach under the hood to release that latch and open the hood completely.

Find the dipstick. It’s usually yellow or orange and will have an oil symbol on it or nearby.

Pull the dipstick all the way out. Wipe it clean with a rag and reinsert the dipstick into the sheath.

Remove it again and note how far up the dipstick the oil reaches. The dipstick should have two lines. If it’s below the bottom line, add a quart of oil through the oil port. That port should be labeled and have an oil can symbol. Use the weight of oil recommended in the manual, typically something like 10w40.

Check the dipstick again after several minutes. The oil does not need to reach the top mark but be between the two marks.

Do not overfill!

Coolant

Ever seen a car on the side of the road with steam coming out from under the hood? Don’t be that person. Check your coolant.

Make sure the engine is completely cool. Open the hood and look for the coolant reservoir. It will most likely be clear with a maximum fill line.

Check your manual to see the type of coolant you should use, typically a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Fill the reservoir to the fill line. Don’t overfill.

If the coolant has particles in it and looks oily or rusty, get it checked by a mechanic.

How to fit snow chains

In many states, if you’re traveling over mountain passes in winter you must carry chains by law. Putting them on your vehicle is a hassle but not as bad as getting stuck or in a wreck.

It’s critical you get chains that fit your tires. An auto parts store or tire salesperson can help.

If your vehicle is front-wheel drive, put the chains on the front wheels. Rear wheel? Put them on the rear. For all-wheel-drive vehicles, check your owner’s manual and do what’s recommended.

Chains always come with instructions so follow yours. The first step: make sure your chains are not twisted but hang freely.

Lay the chains out behind the tire under the car.

Bring both ends of the chain up to the top of the tire and clip them together.

Arrange the chains so the center falls across the middle of the tire. A hook on the chain should connect to a link opposite the hook to secure the chain across the outside of the tire.

The bottom of the chains typically has a tightener denoted by a different color chain, often red. To tighten, thread one end of the red chain through a guiding mechanism and pull it tight. Thread the loose end of the red chain through a loop opposite the guide and pull it tight. Fasten the loose end of the red chain to a link along the side of the tire.

Repeat this on the other side.

Drive forward a short distance, retighten the chains and drive off, slowly. If you hear the chains smacking your vehicle, stop and tighten them.

Reconnecting with family is a top priority for many, whether we’re traveling to see people we love or using travel to have some valuable time together. Thinking about the main reasons you like to travel is a great first step when it comes to reducing expenses – you can keep the things that matter most, and compromise on those that are nice to have but not nearly so important. Daily cocktails by the pool might have to go, for example, but a family bike ride to a local market could be worth spending money on for the shared experience and memories you’ll make while doing it.

2. Save on accommodation

Even backpackers are looking for more refined accommodation options when they travel these days, but it might be time to rethink your must-haves in favor of more affordable stays. Redefining what luxury means to you can help. What matters more: high-thread-count sheets and a bottle of champagne on arrival or an unforgettable opportunity that means you can get to know local people? Why not forego the luxury resort or hotel this time in favor of a humbler homestay, hostel, house swap or locally-owned guest house? That’s what we call authentic travel!

3. Bag a bargain

Saving a bundle before you leave home can make your trip feel far less financially stressful. Keep an eye out for great package deals and last-minute accommodation and tour bookings. Flights are better booked well in advance (fares tend to rise in price as the date of departure approaches), but we’ve found flights that leave on a Tuesday are often cheaper than those departing on other days.

4. Limit who travels

If not everyone in the family is excited about heading overseas, does everyone really need to go? It can make more sense to divide and conquer. Dragging a reluctant teenager along when they’d rather stay home, for example, can spoil it for everyone. Would it be the worst thing in the world for them to stay behind with a grandparent who’d welcome the chance to spend some one-on-one time with them? Just think of the savings!

5. Get money smart

Don’t wait until you get to the airport to exchange money for foreign currency – it’s the most expensive way to go. If you need to buy a popular currency such as US dollars, euros, pounds or yen, do it in the CBD of your own city before you leave – banks and money exchange bureaus are likely to have it in stock and offer a competitive rate. Less common currencies are often better bought once you get to your destination (but again, wait until you leave the airport). Also, keep in mind where you’re traveling from. If you’re coming from a country whose currency isn’t likely to be in demand, you may face a flat ‘no’ when trying to exchange money. Trying to exchange Australian dollars in Mexico or China, for example, may not go your way. Those with US dollars to exchange, however, are likely to have more widespread success. Shopping around online is an easy way to get the best conversion rate possible, and some online currency converters will load up a money card with local currency and deliver it to your door before you leave home – this makes fee-free withdrawals of local currency possible when you’re on the go.

If you’re tempted to travel without any actual local currency in hand, however, keep in mind that wi-fi (and power!) is known to be unreliable in some countries, ATM machines can be temperamental, and tipping in cash is always appreciated.

6. Eat and drink well for less

It’s easy to hemorrhage money on meals when you’re eating out three times a day and buying multiple drinks a day. An absolute must is to travel with a refillable water bottle that has an inbuilt filter. You’ll stay hydrated and save money (not to mention the planet) just by packing this one simple item. If you’re booking into a hotel, call ahead to see if they will include breakfast in your rate (you might be surprised how often they say yes). Self-contained accommodation is a good way to save money – shop at the local market for breakfast supplies, pack a picnic to take with you on a day out, and opt for simple evening meals that can be cobbled together with ease instead of eating out every night. If eating out is a must (we get it), seek out street stalls or locally owned, inexpensive restaurants (ask around to find out where locals like to go). Having a late breakfast and an early dinner every day is also worth considering to pay for one less meal a day. If the portions tend to be huge (we’re looking at you, USA), try ordering a side salad each and sharing a main – there’s no shame in reducing food waste.

7. Get around on public transport

Stay in one place for longer and get to know the local transit system. Many big-city train and bus systems offer discounts for 10 or more trips in a week. If you’re in a city popular with tourists, some bus companies also offer hop-on, hop-off deals with discounts on major attractions. If you’re heading to Europe, a Eurail pass that allows you to travel affordably by train to multiple countries is definitely the way to go.

8. Get resourceful with activities

If you’re looking to reduce the cost of activities when you’re away, all it takes is a little imagination – and you won’t have to compromise on fun. Getting out and about in nature can be positively restorative and will get those feel-good endorphins flowing. Go for a hike in a local reserve, or rent bikes, kayaks or scooters. Mix up the pace by exploring one day and chilling out the next at the beach or even a city park. Consider going your separate ways for the day before meeting up with your travel companions later – take a drawing class, explore a different neighborhood, spend a quiet day wandering around a spiritual site – do what fills your cup. If there’s a guided tour you like the sound of, chances are high there’s also a self-guided tour you could do for less or for free. It pays to get creative!

How to Choose the Right Gear for Your Next Camping Trip

In an age where there’s no shortage of camping brands vying for your patronage, it’s important to be savvy when you need to update your kit. And whether you’re out for a multi-day trek, or enjoying a weekend by the lake, backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags are the most universal camping items. So, as you hunt for the right ones for you, here are a few guidelines to help you along the way.

Capacity

Measured in liters (L), backpack capacity tends to range from 6L all the way up to 100L, with a few exceptions running smaller or larger than this spectrum. Here’s a rough guideline to help you pick a size depending on your activity:

Day trips: a capacity of 30L or less is sufficient for most day trips.

Weekend trips: more space is needed for overnight gear, but the goal should still be to keep the pack as small as possible. 30L-50L is a good range for the weekend.

Multi-day: for a trip this length, you’ll need to bring extra food, clothing, and other essentials. Consider purchasing a 50L-70L backpack.

A week (or longer): depending on how well you can pack a backpack, 70L might be big enough. However, most of you will want something larger than 70L for a trip this long.

Sizing

When you’re getting sized for a backpack, remember that it’s not your height that matters – it’s your torso length. Most brands are pretty good at providing different sizing options, ranging from small to large, along with models specifically designed for men and women. However, if you find that you land somewhere between sizes, I’d suggest looking into a backpack with an adjustable suspension. These tend to be a bit heavier, but they give you the flexibility needed to find that perfect fit.

Waist size should be another consideration since most of your pack weight should be resting on your hips. As a rule of thumb, backpack waist belts can usually accommodate waist circumferences between 20-40 inches. If you don’t fall in that range, many packs give you the option to switch out the belt with something more suitable for your size.

Additional features

A certain amount of ventilation keeps your back from getting too sweaty, and a generous amount of padding is great for comfort, if you don’t mind the extra weight.

There’s also the matter of storage and compartments to aid in organizing your gear. Some packs come with a compartment specifically for your sleeping bag, most come with a top lid (also called a “brain”), and water bottle pockets are pretty standard.

Tent

To get a properly sized shelter, you’re going to need to determine how many people are going with you. If your tent is too large, you’re going to be carrying around more weight than necessary. If it’s too small, you and your pals are going to get to know each other far better than you ever planned on.

As a rule of thumb, tents run smaller than their marketed capacity, so always size up when choosing a shelter. I like to use a two-person tent just for me, a four-person tent works great for a couple, and a six-person tent is perfect for a family of four.

Weather resistance

All tents serve two primary roles: protecting you from the elements and keeping the bugs away. So how do you know if your tent will hold up in bad weather? In theory, it’s as simple as looking at the waterproof rating (measured in millimeters) on the tent. A fabric needs to have a rating of 1,500mm to be considered waterproof, though I’d recommend going much higher than that - ideally 3,000mm or more.

In practice, though, you won’t really know if your tent is waterproof until you use it in the rain. For peace of mind, you can always give your tent a solid coat of waterproofing spray for extra protection.

Portability

Are your car camping or backpacking? For the former, portability won’t be much of a concern, but for the latter, you’ll want to pay close attention to this point.

Weight and packed size play a large role when it comes to the portability of your tent. If you’re planning on carrying your shelter any reasonable distance, you’ll want to keep the weight below 5-6 pounds. Likewise, if your tent materials don’t fold down very well, it’s going to be hard to fit the tent inside of your pack. For the best portability, stick with synthetic materials (like polyester and nylon), along with aluminum or fiberglass poles.

Sleeping bag

Shape

Sleeping bags come in a variety of shapes, but the most common are going to be mummy, rectangular, and semi-rectangular. As the name suggests, a mummy bag is going to hug your body and leave you with very little room to spread out. This is perfect when you want to conserve heat, or when you don’t want a heavy, bulky bag weighing you down on backpacking trips.

Rectangular sleeping bags provide much more room to spread out, but you’ll sacrifice warmth and portability for added comfort. This style is ideal for warm-weather car campers who won’t find themselves in any extreme conditions.

Semi-rectangular sleeping bags are a cross between mummy and rectangular. They have more space inside than a traditional mummy, but they’re also better at insulating than a rectangular.

Filling

The fill of a sleeping bag is what provides insulation against the cold. Your two options are going to be down and synthetic, though often, I’d suggest sticking with down.

Down provides the most insulation, it’s very lightweight and compresses into a tight bundle. It’s the primary option that a backpacker should consider, and many car campers will appreciate it as well.

Synthetic, on the other hand, is heavy, doesn’t pack down well, and lacks some insulative ability. However, it’s also the cheaper option, and it can keep you warm when it’s wet, unlike down.

Weight

Weight is important for any camping gear, and if you plan on hiking long distances with your sleeping bag, I’d recommend keeping it below three pounds. For shorter hikes or car camping, you can get away with a few more pounds tacked on, though it’s rare that you’ll find a sleeping bag that exceeds seven pounds.
